There is a certain level of confidence that comes with age. For me, this started to develop around the time I turned 30. Don’t get me wrong I don’t always have it all together, at times I feel like I have a front row seat on the hot mess express bus, however, even when I’m not fully adulting, I’m usually confident in my decisions. In the spirit of transparency, there are two areas of my life that I have been completely comfortable with: my weight and my skin. The weight thing has many layers, so I’ll save that for another post.
As a teenager, I was fortunate to have pretty good skin. I very rarely had any breakouts, and my tone and texture were always good. My skin was clear, even, and glowing and I never needed or wore foundation. Sometime in my mid-twenties this changed a little; bad eating habits, stress, hormones, etc. changed my skin and I started suffering more from breakouts which lead to a lot of post acne inflammation and hyperpigmentation.
As a skin care enthusiast, when these breakouts would happen I would adjust my routine and nip them in the bud, but now when the blemishes healed, I was always left with a lot of dark spots. As much as I love makeup, there are times I don’t necessarily want to cake it on and wear a full face, especially foundation. There are some days I want to play up the eyes with mascara, swipe on some cream blush, a little lip gloss and go. I remember one day going into a Mac Cosmetics store looking for a new foundation. While the makeup artist was using a corrector on my spots, she made a comment that I looked like a cheetah, yeah that shook my confidence just a bit, and left me feeling self-conscious.
One month ago, I started a challenge with Olay using four products from the Luminous line that are said to improve skin’s tone, texture, and luminosity. I was pretty excited to start this challenge and hoped I would have good results. It didn’t take long to start to notice a change in my skin. Half way through the challenge when I posted an update on Facebook, I was amazed at how my skin was improving. Over the course of the challenge, not only did my skin improve but so did my self-confidence. Here is a look at the routine I followed on my 28-day journey to a better complexion and finding the confidence to go makeup free.
Morning I started my mornings with a glass of warm lemon water to flush my system. I tried something different and decided to see what would happen if I didn’t use a cleanser in the morning. Surprisingly my skin has adjusted to this just fine. I saturate a soft washcloth with warm water and hold it over my face for a few seconds and then just gently wiped my face. After my pseudo cleansing, I followed by dispensing two to three drops of the Olay Luminous Miracle Boost Concentrate into my palm and then working it into my skin.
I love serums that have a dropper style top; it makes it easy to dispense just the right amount of product.
I found this serum to feel very soft and silky on my skin, and it absorbs completely. While I found the serum to provide luminosity, it also dried down somewhat matte which is perfect for my combination skin. This serum left my skin hydrated and glowing but not shiny.
During my morning routine, I also made it a point to start the day with some affirmations. While working my serum in and letting it dry, I repeated various sayings to get my day off to a positive start.
I love myself I acknowledge the blessings in my life I will be patient and kind to those I encounter today
We can be in such a rush in the mornings, slowing down and taking some time for positive thoughts helped set my mood for the day. Once I finished my affirmations, the next step in my a.m. skin care routine was applying the Olay Luminous Light Hydrating Lotion. This moisturizer is perfect for mornings; its hydrating formula penetrates the layers of the skin without feeling heavy.
About halfway through the challenge, I looked at my skin one day and was amazed at how it was transforming. I know it takes time for dark spots to go away, but around day ten, I felt like they were less noticeable, and my overall skin tone was improving.
Evening The routine I followed wasn’t complicated or lengthy. In the evening, my routine was just as simple as in the mornings, but with the addition of two other products from the Olay Luminous line. I started by removing my makeup and cleansing my skin with the Olay Luminous Micellar Water.
I have to rave about the packaging of this tone-perfecting cleanser, makeup remover and toner in one. The pump style is just genius, I place my cotton pad on top and pump two or three times to saturate, no mess and no wasted product.
The rice bran and aloe extract in the micellar water help to break down makeup and grime and everything wipes away. Yes, even mascara is removed. After cleansing with the Olay Luminous Micellar Water, my skin felt fresh and hydrated, and there was no greasy, oily feeling or residue left on my skin.
After cleansing, I move on to treatment with the same Olay Luminous Miracle Boost Concentrate from my morning routine. Just like in the morning, I took my time while applying the serum. While allowing the serum to soak into the skin I slow down for a minute and work on affirmations. Just like going makeup-free was tough in the beginning so was the positive self-talk. I started with these five easy reminders;
1. I will not compare myself to others; 2. I will own who I am; 3. I will do what I love; 4. I will push myself out of my comfort zone; 5. I will love the skin I’m in.
By now, after spending some time on daily reflection and a pep talk, I can finish my routine with an ultra-hydrating moisturizer. In the evening, I swap out the Olay Luminous Light Hydrating Lotion and prep my skin for overnight work with the Olay Luminous Overnight Mask. I can sing the praises of this mask for days, immediately upon application the first night I was blown away. I never thought my skin was dehydrated, but after seeing how it drank up this mask, I realize it was.
The Olay Luminous Overnight Mask is formulated with glycerin and Pro-Vitamin B5; these humectants continuously provide soothing hydration. Not only does this gel mask help improve skins moisture, but the mulberry root extract aids in reducing discoloration. When using this gel mask, I wake up with plump, ultra-hydrated skin. The way my skin glows when I use this mask was instantly noticeable and got even better with continued use.
Each evening, I looked at myself in the mirror and took notice of my skin. As the days went on, not only could I look at myself and see the changes, but I took time to appreciate things I once saw as “imperfections.” A dimple here, a mark there, even a laugh line, these aren’t imperfections, after all, they are parts of me that narrate my story. At the end of the Olay 28 day challenge, I have hydrated, radiant skin, glowing confidence, and a positive outlook. I now feel better about my skin and going makeup free when I choose. Effective skin care doesn’t have to be complicated or cost a fortune. The four Olay Luminous products I used in the 28 day challenge are budget-friendly and helped me achieve my fresh face skin care goal.
