Beauty Uses for Milk of Magnesia

Makeup/ Skin Care

With all the fancy lotions and potions on the market who would have thought the best kept secret in combating oily skin was sitting right in your medicine cabinet. This little wonder in a bottle can also be used to treat acne, seborrheic dermatitis on the face and skin, dandruff and can even be used as a deodorant.

Milk of Magnesia is typically used neutralize stomach acid, and as a laxative to treat constipation, but also to relieve indigestion and heartburn.

If you have a problem with oily skin I probably just saved you a few bucks since most oil mattifiers I have tried range in price from $15-$30, this little secret weapon was $5.49 at CVS and can even be found in some dollar stores. I purchased the smallest bottle I could find but at 12 fl oz it is still huge and will last a long time.  Name brand is not important here they all have the same active ingredient, the one thing I would recommend is to skip the flavored versions on opt for the original. The plain version has no scent.

So here is what you do, cleanse, tone and moisturize your face as usual  I let my moisturizer sit and absorb for about 5 minutes. Next I shake my bottle of Milk of Magnesia and pour little into the cup that came with it. I use a cosmetic sponge to apply mine but you can use a cotton ball, a brush whatever you want. I dab a little on the spots where I tend to get oily which is mostly my cheeks and a bit on the nose and forehead. Allow the Milk of Magnesia to dry. Now listen up don’t go overboard if you use too much it will leave a white cast on your skin, no biggie you can just buff it in or spritz face with rose water and rub it in a little but more. I have found that I don’t need to use a face primer anymore but experiment with your products and see what works for you.  Normally even with my primers and setting sprays by mid day my face turns into an oil slick and I have to constantly use blotting papers, but since I have been using the Milk of Magnesia I have not had any more problems with oil, for me it keeps the oil at bay for the entire day.

Now some people like to use the Milk of Magnesia before they apply their moisturizer I found that when I did it that way it left my skin a little too dry, so try it both ways and see what works for you. Even though I let the milk of magnesia dry before applying my foundation I also found as far as liquid and cream foundations go I get the best results when I follow by applying my foundation by dabbing or stippling with my beauty blender as opposed to rubbing my foundation in. I also used the Milk of Magnesia as a base with powder foundation with no issues

So what do you think? have you ever tried this, would you?

  • I’ve been using this every day for the last few weeks. I still primer my face after the magnesia. But I can’t believe how much less oily my forehead and nose is when I am done!

I have a little, plastic travel bottle that I out the magnesia in so I can just gently squeeze the product onto my cotton pad 🙂

  • I heard about this and I honestly need to try it now. I don’t generally have oily face but I heard about the amazingness that this is and after this post, I am sold!

  • I am so trying this! My skin is super oily and like you said, by mid-day, I’m blotting. I use NYX Shine Killer currently and it’s been the best so far, but I still get oily eventually.
